Mentor Mathematics Advisor Product Description
The Mentor Mathematics Advisor is a windows computer program designed
to help algebra students with homework in a pedagogically sound manner.
It can be used to solve linear equations, quadratic equations and higher
degree polynomial equations; rational equations, and systems of
equations. The Advisor can be used to factor and to expand and simplify
expressions. It can also be used to evaluate more elementary arithmetic
expressions and equations.
The Advisor allows students to enter homework on the computer just as
they would normally write with pencil and paper. The program advises
students at each step whether they are right are wrong. This immediate
reinforcement facilitates learning. The Advisor does not tell the
student correct answers but requires the work from the student. The
Advisor is not a collection of problems worked in advance, "canned"
problems. It will accept problems from the student from a very large
class of problems. The Advisor will randomly generate individual
problems of various types and levels of difficulty or will generate an
entire test.
The Mentor Graphics Tool will display multiple graphs with a
convenient zoom capability to reinforce how graphs can be used to
approximate solutions to equations. The Mentor Graphics Tool color
codes equations to graphs. The refinement of the Mentor Graphics Tool
far exceeds the capabilities of graphing calculators. For example, a
student can enter the equations of a circle or an ellipse and have the
circle or the ellipse graphed in one step. An expression or equation
can be graphed in Cartesian or polar coordinates. The Mentor Graphics
Tool can easily resize graphs on the display screen and can print
graphs.
This program is designed to act like a teacher looking over the
shoulder of a student as the student works. The teacher does not do the
student's work but does issue a warning when the student makes a wrong
turn. The Advisor can be used in the class room, in the computer lab,
and at home. It is a useful supplement to any algebra course.
